Wooden Beam

The 1908 post-and-beam construction of the Alliance Center is typical of the Lower Downtown Denver warehouse district.

Wooden posts and beams, made from Douglas fir trees, were hand-hewn and hand-sawn. No nails were used to fasten pieces together. They have been secured either by mortise & tenon connections, hardwood pegs or by simple “joint geometry”.

Alliance Center posts and beams probably came from the extensive 300 or 400 year-old forests in the southern Rockies. Those old Douglas fir trees have mostly been cut for timber. Through historic preservation we extend the useful life of materials, safeguard the artisanship of our predecessors, reduce consumption and waste, and pass on the legacy we’ve inherited.
