Bamboo is the fastest growing “woody” plant on Earth and can grow more than a foot a day. The mother plant produces new shoots every year with stems maturing for harvest in 5 years. Oak, cherry, walnut and maple have cycles 10 to 15 times longer. Ply bamboo is an alternative for cabinet, countertop and furniture construction, taking stains and finishes exceptionally well. Certain timber bamboos have greater tensile strengths than iron or steel.
However, impacts caused by destruction of exotic habitats make its benefits questionable.
